Award winning actor David Jason (Only Fools And Horses; The Darling Buds Of May) is back as maverick detective Jack Frost in this brand new story in the ratings winning crime series. What is even stranger is that in the UK there is no season 13 at all! Endangered Species was first of all released on a single DVD but is listed (along with the earlier story "Near Death Experience" as season 12. Hence in the UK we have seasons 1-12, an extra disc also labelled series 12 and now series 14 is being released.

I suspect in the US Endangered Species was released as season 13 to avoid a confusing gap (but then they just added to the confusion by having 2 seasons that were effectively single episodes!)

Season 13 is very poor: Avoid!

I've been a follower of Frost since the series first started. I have also read the books and I own all the released DVDs. I was sorry I bought season 13.

Firstly, it's just one episode, and secondly the story was just plain weak by Frost standards. Even ignoring such crass adds such as the car chase and weapons usage, the main problem is that the character behavior was as if the storywriter/director had neither seen previous episodes nor understood the characters (Mullett and Frost working hand-in-hand without acrimony!). In addition, the sub-plot of an advanced relationship between Frost and a young fitness instructor is ridulous and detracts, not adds, to the storyline. If you own the previous series don't bother with this one. If you don't own the previous Seasons, buy them over this, especially Seasons 1-10.

If you love this series, which was one of the greatest cop shows ever to come out of the u.k. then you must see or own this dvd in order to see the last episode. I did feel that they should have put this last episode on the last boxset but at least we finally have the entire series out on dvd in our region. They have been out in region 2 for years. However you can't complain that there is only one episode because there are no more. And If they make another it would be season 14 on a dvd release. But it's been a while since they made this series so this is probably the last episode ever. So if you want to see a well acted tv show that is engaging and worth your time then watch this series and yes get this one too to complete your collection.

This is a great series and has remained so. This is an offshoot of the original Law and Order series. This series focuses on sexual crimes, normally not dealt with on television. The main crimes are rape, child molestation, and everything in between. I am very glad the Law and Order series decided to tackle this once taboo topic and I believe this series has helped open the discussion of rape and sexual abuse which is one of the reasons why I love this series so much.

The acting is great, the plots are amazing and draw in you from the first "dum dum". Since it deals with sensitive subject matter, the episodes may not be appropriate for all viewers. There is high replayability with these episodes which is why it is worth the purchase. If you enjoy crime dramas, especially crime dramas that help open debate and deal with taboo topics, then this is the show for you. I guarentee you will enjoy it.

I watched this twice, to make sure I really got it and to test my perceptions of it. The first time, I watched it in big blocks of three hours over consecutive days and got very tired of it, kind of waiting to get to Caesar's assassination for it to end. The second time, I watched each episode separated by a few days, and it was much much better that way. Like all good films, I saw much more and am sure that it will get even better with subtleties and nuance on repeated viewings.

The plot follows Caesar as he ends the Gallic War, crosses the Rubicon as a revolutionary (or demagogue or psychopath or whatever), and becomes dictator, ending with his murder. However, rather than a single character, such as Claudius in I Claudius, the story omnisciently follows several lives of those revolving around Caesar. You have aristocrats (supporters and opponents), soldiers, and the normal riff-raff of Rome. In many ways, the main character really is Rome itself, as Caesar is at best a shadowy figure, while the others appear and reappear suddenly.

The principal characters are the honorable Centurion Vorenus and his troublesome sidekick, the brutal legionnaire Pullo. They are entirely fictional, and while the actors that portray them are very good, they came off as a bit of a plot device, to get the viewer into certain places and to illustrate things that were occurring. They pop up in Caesar's last major Gallic battle, scramble for work in ROme, join Caesar's civil war effort in Greece and Egypt, then return to seek new careers in Rome. They stumble across Pompey, Cleopatra, and Octavian (the future Augustus), all the while rather oblivious to the true meaning of events unfolding around them, even though Vorenus becomes a Senator. That being said, the intrigues that weave their way through the story are quite fun, and while embellished as all historical fiction must be, accurate in the outline of events as we know them. You also have the aristocrats (actual historical figures, though with added fictional details) of Atia and Servilia; they are mortal enemies, both connected to Caesar and intriguers that are as cold as they come.

I did not need to watch this to learn the history, though it would definitely be good for that. For me, the greatest pleasure is the painstaking accuracy of the portrayal of Rome and life at that time. The viewer is served a host of wonderful images, vivid colors, and very well drawn characters. You can not only smell Rome, but feel the chaos and fear that convulsed the city at this time. Then there is the manner in which people lived, evocations of their non-Christian religious beliefs and rituals, the conditions in which slaves lived, and the character of the Roman aristocrat, who would resignedly accept death for the sake of honor or as the price for risking political gain. It is truly wonderful, and the bonus disk has excellent mini-documentaries that explain much of it. (I did find inaccuracies, such as the claim that "anything goes" sexually - the Romans were notorious homophobes, for example - but these were very few.)

Warmly recommended. While the story and drama are not as tight as in I Claudius, it is an absolutely first-rate evocation of a vanished world.

Wonderful historical fiction

This is another wonderful series from HBO. The major events are historically accurate with detailed fiction woven in elegantly. Pay attention to the small things, like innerworkings of the Roman army and what different classes of people are eating for dinner. This might be the best depiction of "everyday Rome" on film. If you enjoy top notch drama and/or are a history buff this series is worth your time.

this show is wonderful! (but not for the squeamish)

I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend, who is a history buff. I didn't expect to like the show as much as I did. He loves the action/fighting and I love the drama and sex scenes. We both appreciate the historical accuracy (the plot is mostly fiction, but the characters and broad events are very educational). The actors are excellent, the costumes and scenery are elaborate, the writing is good. Overall, it's a fantastic show.

This DVD is great to watch. It fits what I teach in history. You do not have to show it all just select your scenes. I have the book and have enjoyed this video.

America's "young" and oh so "restless"

I decided to watch "Founding Brothers" as background research for my class on the American Presidency. My surprise was great when I realized the beginnings of America resemble a modern day soap opera, with just as much drama and deception. This production of the History Channel is based on the best-selling book of the same title by historian Joseph Ellis, and presents an intricate, highly political and oftentimes highly manipulative picture of America's first steps towards self-government.

The series is four hours long and covers the first three presidents - George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson - in all their mandates, along with the politics that surrounded not only them as individuals but their cabinets as well. There is superb acting from the cast in period clothing and a great job has been done in making them look like their alter egos. The voices of the patriots were entrusted to actors of the caliber of Brian Dennehy, Michael York and Peter Coyote.

"Founding Brothers" provides great insight and scholarly analysis on other politicians of the time as well, those who did not occupy the executive's office, yet had just as much influence in the shaping of the political future of the country. Thus we have extensive background on Benjamin Franklin, John Jay and Alexander Hamilton to name but a few, this last one a shrewd man, also known as the American Machiavelli, and responsible for the engineering of America's financial system.

I don't have anything to say about the quality of the material in the series, which is all discussed by first grade historians and researchers. I was surprised however, by the charisma and integrity that seemed to have been the distinguishing marks of George Washington, the irascibility that precluded John Adams from becoming an effective leader, and the appalling manipulative and conniving personality of Thomas Jefferson, a man known for having betrayed his closest friends.

"Founding Brothers" presents a picture sometimes hopeful, sometimes disdainful of American politics. An eye-opener for anyone wishing to understand the nature of the country's government.

A good series, a great introduction to the book

I enjoyed this series, it is a typical History Channel presentation, more just a basic overview and rote knowledge, but that's ok. I think it is a great introduction to this time period in American history, and I wish I had seen the series before I read Ellis' companion book, I would have had been able to bring that prior knowledge into the reading. The series is well done, I just have one complaint, the actor who played George Washington! Washington was a striking individual in life, the actor who plays him here, well enough said. I wish they had gotten the actor who played Washington in The Revolution, he looked more the part. Oh well, this is a minor complaint.

I got this for my son for Christmas. Ed, Edd and Eddy is one of his favorites and since it got cancelled, finding this for sale at Amazon worked out great.

He watches it over and over. Personally, I think it's pretty goofy, but hey -- to each his own!

Nothing but the Ed

It's always a bit of a shock to go back and watch the early episodes of a show you've been watching for years. Here, the characters are a bit lumpier, the animation a bit rough, and the voice actors are still finding their way into their characters. But the cartoons are none the less enjoyable for that. By the time we get to the end of the season, everything is looking a bit brighter and steadier, and more like what we're used to. That Cartoon Network put out these complete season DVDs was a surprise, especially after the first couple of "best of" sets. Let's hope the successful sale of these will encourage CN to release a few more toons to complete DVD sets, such as "Dexter's Lab," "Courage the Cowardly Dog," and "Two Stupid Dogs," just to name a few random favorites.
